January Birthstone: Garnet

Happy Birthday if you're a January baby… your birthstone is Garnet. Most people think of the garnet as a red gemstone, but in fact, it exists in all kinds of colours. Many will say that a blue garnet does not exist. In the past this statement would be completely accurate, however blue garnet was discovered in the 1990's in Madagascar. Even today, blue garnet remains a rare stone and can fetch very high prices.

Famous for its use in Victorian jewellery, particularly the deep red colours, garnets are believed to have been exchanged as gifts between friends to demonstrate their affection for each other and to insure that they meet again. Looking even further back in history to Ancient Egyptian times, garnets were one of the gems that where entombed with Egyptian pharaohs as they believed the stones would cast light for passage to the afterlife.

Nowadays a gift of garnet is thought to be symbolic of love and the desire for a loved one’s safe travel and speedy homecoming.

Celebrating your second wedding anniversary? Garnet jewellery is often given to mark a #2 Wedding Anniversary!
